Obituary of Helen June Todd
Helen “June” Todd, 97, wife for 34 years of the late Frank Todd, Sr., passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 16, 2023. She was born in Newburgh, New York, on June 8, 1925, to the late Clement and Norma (McGarry) Nerz.
June is survived by her beloved children: Stephen Todd, and his wife, June, of Manchester, CT; Susan Bell of Ellington, CT; Michael Todd, and his wife, Letty, of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Mary Pat VanWyngarden, and her husband, Darwin, of Ripon, CA. She cherished her many grandchildren who lovingly called her “Goom” or “Goomy”: Sean and Lori Todd, Christopher, Kevin, and Amanda Bell, Amanda LaPointe, Patrick, Palmer, Tyler, and Alyssa (Maxwell) Thiele, Elle and Leah VanWyngarden, and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her infant daughters Mary Ann and Dorothy, son Frank, Jr., and son-in-law, Steven Bell.
June is a 1942 graduate of Newburgh (NY) Free Academy and before beginning her family, was employed by the New York Telephone Company. For many years after that she was fulfilled by raising her children, from the birth of her first son to the college graduation of her youngest daughter. She was an active member of the Alpha Beta Zeta Sorority Mother’s Club, an organized group of her friends who supported each other and held social gatherings with their children. Many years later, this group evolved into the “Tired Mothers” who traveled to the Jersey shore each summer for fun and relaxation.
When she found she was blessed with some free time on her hands, June became an EMT and volunteered with the Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corps. for 10 years. Her innate sense of compassion made this position of helping and caring for sick and injured people natural to her. She received an award when she logged her 500th call.
Over time most of her children and grandchildren had moved to Connecticut, so, naturally, she followed. When she wasn’t visiting, caring for, or cooking and baking for her family, she continued her volunteer work at the Manchester Memorial Hospital Gift Shop clocking over 2,000 hours. She also served as Secretary to the Board of Directors.
She lived for 25 years at Welles Country Village where she served for many years as the Secretary of the Resident’s Association. She also enjoyed participating in several musical productions there.
