An Easter so very long ago, I was maybe 6 or 7 ..not sure. We were at Aunt Jean’s house as we called it. My father’s sister. Of course, we noted Uncle Elmer, whom we secretly loved more - because of his kind and patient nature. We were all dressed for Easter service. All the girls had frilly dresses, white tights, patent leather shoes. Seriously uncomfortable girl’s wear! I have never been a fan of fancy and all I ever wanted to do as a kid, was to play outside.
There was the big wheel in the carport just beaconing me. Oh my, how I begged to go out there for just a spin on it. I am sure that I was unsufferable, and finally Aunt Jean agreed as long as I DID NOT get dirty. She may have insisted, perhaps it was just happenstance, but David joined me that morning before Mass.
I hopped on that big wheel and remember how fun it all was as we took turns riding all around the carport. David came out unscathed, but I had oil all over the fringe of my dress. Needless to say I was a huge disappointment to Aunt Jean as we arrived at church that day. But, I will never forget our conspiratorial giggles over that weekend and what fun we had.
It was like that for me to be his cousin, and I will always remember his smile, and a reliable mischief.
